WHAT WE DO?

How our sessions work

Therapeutic Life Story Work aims to provide an opportunity for the child or young person to explore, question and understand the past events of their lives. The work is ideally undertaken with their primary carer so that both can develop their knowledge of each other and begin to understand the behaviours feelings and cognitive processes that manifest themselves within their current situation.

This work is based on Richard Rose's model of 'Therapeutic Life Story Work', utilising Play and Art Therapy techniques and consists of 3 stages:

Stage one

Information is gathered from reading Local Authority files and any other sources identified by the Local Authority, such as interviews with previous social workers, foster carers and birth family members.

Stage two

TLSW sessions with the child or young person, (ideally with the primary carer/s for emotional security and safety) encouraging the child to externalise their thoughts, feelings and emotions. These are then explored and recorded, usually on wallpaper, to promote sequencing, reframing and internalization of past events.

Stage three

A Life Story Book is produced for the child or Young person, based on the TLSW sessions

If appropriate, a memory box can also be made.

Through the Therapeutic Life Story Work process, the child or young person will gain a sense of empowerment and ownership over their story and their narrative, leading to positive changes in their life.
